No hot water today
Updated October 2026

A cold shower before work or school is its own kind of emergency. The good news: many hot water failures can be fixed or replaced the same day, and a quick check before you call can sometimes save the call-out altogether.
Mornington Hot Water connects you with licensed local plumbers who do same-day hot water work across the Mornington Peninsula. Send the quote form with a note that you have no hot water and your details go straight through.
Check these three things first
- Electric storage: check the switchboard. A tripped circuit breaker or safety switch is the most common cause of a suddenly cold tank, and resetting it costs nothing. If it trips again straight away, leave it off and get a licensed plumber or electrician to test it.
- Gas: check the pilot light and whether your other gas appliances still work. If the cooktop is dead too, the issue may be gas supply, or an empty LPG bottle, rather than the hot water system. Bottled gas is common through the hinterland, and an empty bottle is a surprisingly common cause of a cold shower.
- Everything: look at the tank. Water pooling underneath means the tank has failed and needs replacing. No repair will save it.
The holiday-house version
If you have just arrived at a house that has been empty for weeks, work through the same list in a slightly different order. Check that the isolation switch or gas valve was not turned off when the place was closed up, check the LPG bottle level, and look for water under the tank before you do anything else. An idle tank with a corroded anode and a weeping relief valve is the classic Peninsula failure, and it almost always announces itself on the first night.
Repair today or replace today
If the tank is sound and the fault is a part, a repair usually has hot water back on the same visit. If the tank is leaking or the system is past its lifespan, the plumbers we work with can often do a like-for-like replacement the same day for common sizes, if you get in early. Down the Peninsula towards Rye, Sorrento and Flinders, travel time makes an early request even more important, and over summer it matters more again because every plumber is stretched. Either way, you get the price before any work starts.
What same-day work costs
Repairs typically run $150 to $600 depending on the part. A like-for-like replacement starts from under $1,200 installed for a smaller electric storage swap and runs higher for gas, continuous flow and larger tanks. After-hours attendance costs more than daytime, so if you can hold out until morning, book the morning.
Frequently asked questions
Can I really get hot water back today?
Often, yes. Parts repairs happen on the spot, and common replacement sizes are usually on the truck or a short supplier run away. The later in the day you ask, and the further down the Peninsula you are, the more likely the job lands the next morning.
My hot water is lukewarm, not cold. Same problem?
Lukewarm usually points to a failing element or thermostat on an electric system, or a tempering valve issue. It is a cheaper fix than a dead system, and worth booking before it becomes one.
Should I turn the system off while I wait?
If the tank is leaking, yes: turn off the power or gas to the unit and close the cold water inlet valve on the tank to slow the leak. If it simply went cold, leave it as it is so the plumber can diagnose it.
Does salt air make sudden failures more likely?
It can. Tanks and fittings mounted outside near the bay or the back beaches corrode faster, and a weeping valve or rusty base is often the warning sign. If you notice either, book a check before the tank fails outright.
