Main Ridge sits along the top of the Peninsula's southern ridge, heavily treed, sparsely settled and made up of large rural blocks, vineyards and bush properties. It is as far from reticulated services as the Peninsula gets. Mornington Hot Water is a free referral service. We connect you with licensed hot water plumbers who cover Main Ridge. We are not a plumbing business ourselves, and the referral costs you nothing.
Everything is self-supplied
There is no mains gas up here, so hot water runs on bottled LPG, electric storage or a heat pump, and water comes from rainwater tanks. Both facts shape the decision. LPG costs more per litre of hot water than mains gas and the bottle has to be kept full, which matters more when a trip to swap one is not quick.
Heat pumps suit these properties well. There is unlimited space, airflow is never an issue, and nobody is close enough to hear a compressor. Where a property already runs rooftop solar panels, timing the heat pump for daylight hours brings the running cost down further.
Tree cover is the complication for solar hot water. Dense canopy shades many roofs, so a shading assessment matters, and frosty mornings on the ridge are worth raising with the installer when siting an outdoor unit.
Repair it or replace it
If the tank itself is leaking, it is a replacement. Elements, thermostats and relief valves on a younger tank are often worth fixing, with repairs roughly $150 to $600 depending on the part. See hot water repairs and hot water replacement.
As a guide, electric storage like-for-like swaps run from around $800 to $2,500 installed. Gas storage and continuous flow sit around $1,200 to $3,500, and a heat pump $3,000 to $6,000 before incentives. The cost guide has the detail.
Same-day replacement is sometimes possible for common sizes, though travel time out here makes an early request important.
Frequently asked questions
Will a plumber come this far?
Yes. Expect travel time to feature in the scheduling and possibly in the quote, and ask about it when they call.
What happens if my LPG runs out?
No hot water until the bottle is swapped. Properties that rely on LPG for hot water usually keep a spare bottle for exactly this reason.
Is a heat pump reliable through a ridge winter?
Yes. Modern units run efficiently in cool conditions and carry a backup element for cold snaps. Siting out of the worst of the frost helps.
